My (almost) craft room!

Hi friends! We are back from NJ! It was a very busy weekend, but it was fun to see friends and family, as always! Our internet was actually out the first day or so after we got home, so I'm just now getting a chance to update you on things!

I will have more pictures to share from my friend Amanda's bachelorette party and other happenings, but for now, I want to show you what I've been working on...

First, a little background....Since Audrey's birth, I have been doing more projects than ever, and as a result, have accumulated so much fabric, ribbon, elastic, and other supplies, that they were taking over several rooms of the house! All of my sewing and crafting things were just scattered in closets, bags, and most of them on the guest room bed! That made it really hard to find things when I needed them, not to mention, my dining and kitchen tables were my only work spaces, so they were constantly a disaster zone. I knew I needed a craft room, badly! Unfortunately, I didn't have one whole room to devote to crafting, so I decided that the best place to create a space would be in the den/guest room downstairs.

In an ideal world, I would have this whole room as my craft space, but the guest bed down here has been so convenient, and actually used much more than our guest bedroom upstairs, that getting rid of this bed just wasn't an option.

This is what one side of the room used to look like:

And now:

This is just an "in progress" shot....the beginning of the transformation! I just snapped a few quick pictures for you so you can follow along as the room changes. This side of the room will be my craft area, and the other side will remain as the guest room area.

Let's take a look at the guest room area before:

And now:

What a disaster, right?! I told you I just snapped the pictures without doing a thing to the room! If you can't tell, the bed is behind the sofa. My plans for this side of the room, are to move the sofa out (into storage), and maybe relocate the bed against one of the walls. Of course, eventually, I will add wall art and more decorative touches to finish things off.

But let's get back to the side of the room that I'm really excited about!

I plan on making the entire wall behind the desk a magnetic chalkboard. I think that will be great to hold pictures of things for inspiration, and obviously perfect to write notes on while I'm working. I'm also in the process of looking for a larger table that I can paint white and distress. I think that will look great against the black chalkboard wall! Above the fireplace, I will probably hang a large canvas of Audrey...what else could be more beautiful and inspirational?!

That old, tiny shelf is going to be replaced too. I'm thinking I'll get this one, from Ikea:

The shelf will go against the wall, to the right of the fireplace, and I'll fill it with baskets to hold all of my supplies. I will probably need a second type of storage...maybe a dresser...but I think I will play that by ear and see how things come together after I have the shelf set up.

That was a lot all at once, wasn't it? I feel like I'm rambling a bit, but it's just that I'm so excited about this space! It's definitely going to be a little escape for me when I get to come down here and work on my projects!

What do you guys think of it so far? Do you have a craft space of your own? Share a link to pictures if you can!

Stay tuned for pictures of Amanda's bachelorette party...if you want to see a sneak peek of my dress, check my Instagram! It's another one from Rent the Runway. More on that soon!

  1. Looks great! Awesome use of space. I'm really impressed how polished your town home looks.

I saw those ikea shelves on a blog where they spray painted them gold. They looked Awesome! Also, a dresser would be great to hold fabric. Maybe it could double as a night stand for the guest bed.

  2. Thanks Mimi! Those are great suggestions! I think I also saw that shelf painted gold! I think I will keep it black though, to tie in with my chalkboard wall....although I do LOVE me some gold!:)

  3. Loving the space. I love mixed spaces like that - they can work really well. Do you know where you saw the unit painted gold? I would love to see it!

  4. @purple pixie thank you so much! I saw it here:

  5. I know it's nothing fancy - but I love the rubbermaid drawer storage units for storing fabric, thread, paint.. etc.. It's cheap, easy and most importantly, it WORKS. It's also customizable, you can add more storage easily without replacing the whole thing if (or when ;)) you run out of space.

Here are pics from a few years ago of my (tiny) craft space:

It's no longer nearly that clean and my books have taken a hike over to the bookshelf to give me more workspace!

  6. Thanks for sharing, Michelle!

  7. I do not have a craft room- only a disaster of a playroom that my kids enjoy! But I love a good room makeover so I look forward to seeing some after pics. I have huge pics of my children in my den - super inspirational:)

  8. I find these projects are hard to start but well worth the effort in terms of satisfaction and practicality once finished. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!
