Bird's nest tree topper

This year I wanted something a little different to top our tree. Usually I make a big bow, but this year, I decided a pretty, white bird would be perfect. The problem was, I couldn't find any that were the right size. Then I thought...."how cute would a bird in a nest be?!" I knew that was the perfect topper for our tree this year!

Ready for my easy tutorial on how to make your own bird's nest tree topper? Ok...let's get to it.

You'll need:

  • Grapvine wreath
  • Felt
  • Moss
  • Bird
  • Eggs (I used wooden beads, not pictured)
  • Extra sticks and faux leaves (not pictured)
  • Ribbon (any color, not pictured)
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
First, lay your wreath on the felt to see where you need to trim it.

Once your felt is cut to size, hot glue it to the back side of your wreath. I highly recommend putting the glue on the the wreath instead of the felt. I have burned my fingers badly in the past by putting hot glue on felt! Do not follow in my footsteps! :)

Now, turn your wreath over and start glueing in some moss.

I kind of piled my moss up in one corner because the bird will take up the rest of that empty space.

The bird I bought had a little clip attached to the bottom, so that made it easy to secure onto the nest.

I couldn't find any eggs at the craft store (wrong season, I guess!), so I just used some wooden beads I had on hand, which worked out just fine!

I also added in a few sticks and some faux leaves to one side of the nest.

Then I added some more moss underneath the bird to hide the clip.

I ran some ribbon through some stronger branches on the back of the wreath. This is how you'll attach the nest to your tree.

Then just tie it around the top branches of your tree. I even stuck a tree branch through a wreath branch for extra stability.

Truth be told, I would rather my nest was sitting in the tree more like a real bird's nest would, but I couldn't figure out a way to get it to sit like that and still be stable enough, so for now it will stay like this! I'm still pretty happy with it though!

What is your tree topper this year? Do you have a creative tree topper, or maybe a sentimental one that has been in the family for years? Let me know in the comments!
